Joao Fernandes

Artist statement

As a freshman I spent most of my time developing craft and value in my art. Since then I can visually understand what I have accomplished. I am able to take my self away from a disruptive atmosphere and tune into my own realm paying attention to detail. Now that I have become a senior I’ve realized what the process takes to develop great work. Through the four years I’ve been here I learned to plan out my piece.

In my photography work I tried to achieve a mood where it seemed creepy and scary. The photos are of my backyard at night. Each photo shows how my yard changes moods when it’s dark. This body of work is in response to the feelings I get when I come home at night. I became intrigued with how the space looked, and it was what inspired me most to produce this work.

In my figure drawing work, I look to capture the figure the best way possible using different mark-making strategies. I used color to show the different tones in the figure when the figure is being lit by light. My figure drawing work shows how I have grown as an artist, exemplifying my unique style of blending pencils to create space around the figure. The work shows great risk because the marks are flowing and are not limited.

As a person I have grown both mentally and literally, but I myself have stayed the same, always trying to get better at my art weather I choose to continue in this work or I choose something else that interests me.

Reflection on Critic (10/27/09)

The critique we had gave me much help on what i should work on and how I should slow down my process. i feel that i had many good pieces and much of my work looked finished . My figure drawings were very nicely put on paper and I guess i did a good job on the foreshortening that I had to approach that day. The critiques the class does really help me and i wish next time we do a critique we could do it the same way.

Independent piece work....

In this independent study i will be focussing on conveying the message of how fast food is bad for your body. in this piece i will be using colored pencil and led pencil to create a dynamic composition and a very layered and detailed drawing. I will use a sheet of paper about 13 by 6 inch. this independent piece will be use to make me slow down my work process in order to come out with a finished piece cant wait to see the end result......

apple cutter piece 1

one thing that i am struggling with in this piece is trying to figure out what to do in the background of my image.

Something that is working for me is the detail that i am paying attention to and the composition of my piece shows that i really thought about it.
